Niels is a Research Assistant at UNU-MERIT and Maastricht University, where he mainly works on the projects of MIGNEX and ADMIGOV. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Sociology at the University of Amsterdam in 2020, specialising in international migration and "immigrant integration" in the Netherlands. In 2021, he obtained his master’s degree in Sociology at the Erasmus University Rotterdam. His main research interest is European migration policy in general, and more specifically EU migration policy in relation to irregular migration. Other interests include the politics of crisis, securitisation and externalisation. Niels is mainly specialised in qualitative methods (i.e. qualitative content analysis, discourse analysis, interviews).
